Text Box: There’s nothing better than a delicious meal prepared from fresh, seasonal ingredients. A ripe, juicy tomato, warm from the sun, and the spicy scent of fresh basil in summer. Roasted sweet potatoes with chili spices and juicy apples in fall. Grilled asparagus and tender salad greens in spring. Roasted squash and root vegetables in winter. Eating and enjoying foods at the peak of their flavor is truly one of life’s greatest pleasures.
The prepared and convenience foods industry has exploded. Studies show that consumers now spend more than 50% of their food dollars on meals prepared away from home. I’ve eaten my share of these, and still occasionally do so, but I find that is much easier to maintain my weight and that I just plain feel better when I avoid them. Food grown locally tastes better and is more nutritious, so I seek out farmers markets and local vendors whenever possible.
My passion for cooking is an offshoot of two other passions—gardening and reading. I started a small herb garden (which has grown considerably over the years), and I fell in love with the way that fresh herbs can transform a plain meal into an extraordinary one. My garden has expanded over the years to include heirloom tomatoes (the “black” varieties are my favorites), beans, lettuce, onions, squash, asparagus, potatoes, radishes, carrots, peppers, currants, blueberries, and a sizable raspberry patch.
My love of reading led to a large collection of cookbooks and magazines, bookmarked with dozens of recipes to try. Unfortunately, I don’t come from a long line of adventurous home cooks and had to discover new foods on my own, but that was half the fun. Once my taste bud horizons expanded, I discovered I could actually “taste” a dish before I actually prepared it, and from there a self taught cooking fanatic was born.
I discovered the world of personal chefs several years ago when I was looking for a unique gift. The recipients redeemed the gift certificate for a freezer full of prepared meals and didn’t stop raving about how much they enjoyed it for months.
After spending over twenty years in the health insurance industry, I longed for a career that would allow me the flexibility to take care of personal obligations, as well as allowing me to do something that I truly loved every day. As a Personal Chef I get to do what I love, and help others enjoy fresh, healthy meals.
I am a member of Personal Chefs Network. I have supplemented my self taught skills with classes at the International Culinary Arts & Sciences Institute.
I am a member of Slow Food USA, a non-profit, eco-gastronomic organization that supports a biodiverse, sustainable food supply, local producers, heritage foodways, and rediscovery of the pleasures of the table.
I am ServSafe Certified (the same food safety course required of restaurant managers), and am fully insured to work in your home.
